  WHAT HAPPENED?

  Arsenal missed out on the Premier League title this season in heartbreaking fashion, however, they are looking to put their misery away quickly and prepare for next season. As such, Mikel Arteta has asked the club to sign a striker as a priority before the start of their pre-season tour.

  THE BIGGER PICTURE

  As per The Independent, the two names that are prominent on Arsenal's shortlist are Newcastle United's Alexander Isak and Ajax's Brian Brobbey. They also have Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres on their list as a possibility but they may face competition for his signing from Chelsea.

  In regard to Isak's situation, the Gunners know that Newcastle may not want to sell the Swede this summer and are therefore preparing other options.

  During the January transfer window, Arsenal tried to sign Brentford's Ivan Toney to fortify their goalscoring abilities, however, the club was thrown off by the Bees' asking price of £100 million ($127m) and therefore decided to move on to other targets and are unlikely to target him again this summer.

• WHAT NEXT FOR ARSENAL?

  The Gunners will start their pre-season on July 27 in the United States against Manchester United and Arteta will be hoping that the club can confirm the signing of a striker prior to that.
